When the family has nowhere to go, they may have very limited options as far as housing for the adults and children in the family. The pets are left behind because the family has no provision for them and perhaps are even unable to afford to feed them.

In desperation, therefore, the pets are left behind when the family leaves the house assuming that someone will rescue them. The truth is that it could be quite some time before anyone comes to look over the house for the bank and often the pets are found quite ill or no longer alive. The depression that accompanies foreclosures often causes people who would otherwise be more responsible pet owners to do the unthinkable and leave their family friends when they move on.

Foreclosures happen for a number of reasons. The loss of a job, or the layoff temporarily that would cause a homeowner to fall behind and not be able to catch up, medical problems that cost a small fortune and causes job loss, or divorce with battles over the mortgage payments. Other reasons might be the overextending of the money coming into the household, drug or alcohol addiction, or co-owners that are in conflict.

Whatever the reason the home is foreclosed on, the occupants must eventually move. Pets that can’t be taken along should be made arrangements for. If you are experiencing foreclosure and don’t have a place to put your pets, call the local humane society or pet shelter to see what they can do. They may be able to help or steer you to someone who can.

Put an ad in the local paper or on bulletin boards with a picture of your pet. Explain the situation. Many people are sympathetic to the number of pets being left behind and may be willing to help by adopting your pet. In your state it may be against the law to abandon your pet according to animal cruelty laws.

If you want to try to sell your home to avoid foreclosure, you may be able to sell the house to an investor quickly. They usually have cash to make purchases and have creative ways to help you pay off the bank so you have a fresh start. This could give you more options, which will help you if you would like to take your pets along with you when you leave.
